Samsung Blackjack Review

I have been playing with the Cingular Samsung BlackJack (aka SGH-i607) for some time now, so I’ll tell you what I think of it. The device has a great design and is one of the smallest Windows Mobile Smartphone with a QWERTY keyboard. Size is usually a compromise over performance but thankfully the Samsung BlackJack is a powerful, fast, 3G-enabled phone with Push-Email capabilities. The battery life is decent for such a thin device – it blows the Motorola Q out of the water and Samsung has even included a higher capacity battery that almost doubles the standard battery life. Finally, 3G is no joke here: in real life tests, we hit 731kbps. (See video in the full post). Does this sound too good to be true?

Phone
The BlackJack voice functions work very well – the sound is loud and clear. Things like the contact list, voicemail and call logs are quite easy to use, although it takes some time to get used to the Windows Mobile interface. It is better thought out than on the Treo 700w in my opinion.

The display is not a touch screen, so everything has to be done using the joystick and the buttons. The user interface (UI) is fairly good for the day-to-day use (call, send SMS, and search a contact…), but the interface is a bit annoying when navigating heavily populated menus (settings/options). Fortunately, most frequently used applications are one or two clicks away.

The only voice function that I have a problem with is the lag that happens when I answer a call (1 to 2 seconds).

Text/Email
Thanks to its QWERTY Keyboard, the Samsung Blackjack is very proficient at text messages / emails. Compared to the Treo 700w, I like the fact that SMS and email are clearly separated in the user interface (in the Treo 700w, you had to go into Outlook, then select a different “Inbox” depending on what you want to send.

There are several ways to get the Push-Email feature. I’m using an Exchange Server (hosted - costs $7/mo or so) that I can access from my phone, desktop, laptop or web browser.

Keyboard
Talking about the keyboard, I think that Samsung could have done a better job. The keyboard has a design flaw: the secondary characters (* ( ) * & ^ %..) have the same size and color then the main characters (Q W E R T Y …). That makes the keyboard not very readable. The Treo 700w still has the best keyboard of all the Windows Mobile devices and it’s hard to understand why Samsung has not been able to extract the strong points of the Treo keyboard.

Blackjack and Treo keyboards

Data Connect
The Blackjack is a 3G device (UMTS), and as such, I was expecting real-life speeds of about 450kbps. When I tested the unit (using mobile Internet Explorer on dslreport.com), it exceeded my expectations: it hit 731kbps on average (see video) and as high as 900+kbps. That compares to the average 450kbps of my Treo 700w (Verizon). While browsing the web on mobile IE, I noticed that there was little latency, making the page refresh faster than the Treo.

Another important factor to take into consideration is that the Blackjack can be used as a 3G modem on the Cingular network without any additional software and without breaking the terms of use. I think that Verizon still forbids their customers to use their 3G phones as modems. As a 3G modem, the Blackjack will connect your laptop at 520kbps (down) / 210kbps (up), which is fairly decent. I was expecting something faster.

Battery Life
Conditions under which the unit was tested:

  • Default brightness level
  • Infra-Red OFF
  • Bluetooth OFF
  • 30mn of talk time per day
  • Push-Email on 24/7
  • Moderate Web Browsing

The battery life is good for such a thin device - the small battery lasted exactly 48 hours before dying on the first charge. However, after one month of use, it came down to 24 hours. The bigger battery (provided in the box) lasts almost twice as long, at the cost of a slightly bulkier and heavier phone (still lighter/small than the Treo 700w). Note that even with the extended battery, the Blackjack is still much smaller and lighter than the Treo 700w. I regret that Samsung chose not to use a mini-USB to charge and synch the device. Also the blackjack does not charge on a generic 12V USB car adapter – which is a pity.

Anyhow, this is exactly what the Motorola Q should have been (read review).

Web Browsing
Everything worked well until Pocket Internet Explorer (IE) gets buggy. Every other day, Pocket IE will stop downloading pages, displaying instead a blank screen. I tried to kill IE and restart it, but a reset (remove the battery) was required to get it back to normal. I got that a lot on mobile.palm.com.

Conclusion
The Cingular Samsung BlackJack is my new favorite Windows Mobile Smartphone. It has a good deal of improvements that I wanted over my Treo 700w and beats it in every aspect that are important to me: smaller, lighter, faster, GSM – it has it all.

Update 5/24: If you use the integrated MSN messenger on Cingular, each message will be considered as an SMS and charged as such. Consider it before starting a long conversation :)

Update 5/28: I installed Google Maps and it works perfectly (traffic info included). A number of people told me that the BlackJack did not support Google Maps fully or at all. What's the problem?

Update 10/23: We played with the Blackjack 2, and we like it a lot.

If you have suggestions or additional questions, leave a comment, I’ll try to reply as soon as I can

I bought my Blackjack at Best Buy and had the internet activated through a store rep. I had read where the service for BlackBerry and some other smart phones was higher through Cingular, since they used their own network. They said this is so. I told them to ignore the issue and resolved it myself afterwards. I called another AT&T service rep on the phone and they said the 20 dollar a month service was ok...and that's what they bill me each month. I am almost always in a solid Edge area and ocassionally in really fast 3G about 40 minutes south north of Tulsa, OK. Works great for 20 a month.

Better way to kill the swoosh start-up sound is to edit whatever audio profile you are are using. Settings / Profiles / (scroll to your profile)/ Menu / Edit / System volume / "off". This kills the swoosh, but keeps all your other audio settings.

Kevin asked: “Blackjack or iPhone”? Kevin, it depends what you want to do. I am still using the black jack because I host my email/calendar/contacts on a hosted Exchange server to get push-email and over-the-air sync. The qwerty keyboard is also critical to me. In general, I think that the iPhone is a great personal smart phone, but if you need to get stuff done the blackjack is better. BlackBerry devices are also a popular choice, but they do cost more to own and operate.

Great phone. Awesome speed. I have noticed a huge improvement on AT&T network (it is now very comparable to Verizons) A few things you can do to extend battery life
Change the following Settings.
They are under
Start>settings>power managemant:
*Back light time out
*display time out
*display brightness
*Keypad backlight(choose Custom time)

Blackjack or Iphone?

- I am leary about the lack of replacement coverage for the Iphone. I will not use the music capability of an iphone. Maps, web browsing and email will be my main use.
Thanks

By Annoying "wooosh" sound at start-up , 09/10/07 5:24 AM (CommentID #329136)

I turned off the annoying start-up "woosh" by setting my phone to "silent", rather than the "normal" default setting. In the silent mode, you can change the "ring" to a normal ring (like a regular telephone ring). Although you're in "silent" mode, your phone will ring anyway because you changed the setting from "vibrate" or "silent" to "ring."

To turn off the 3G startup sound, change your system sound setting to low or off.
If you are getting poor reception take it to an ATT store and replace your Cingular SIMM card with the ATT SIMM card. This makes a huge difference.

For longer battery life, turn down the screen brightness and lower the display timeout setting.
I have used and researched many phones and this is my current favorite. I am just anxious for the WM 6.0 upgrade to be offically available.
To use the phone as a modem for your PC, you need the blackjack modem driver installed on your laptop and open settings, connections, USB and chabge this to Modem, rather than mass storage or Active Sync

I'm considering taking it back to the store before my 30 days are up JUST because of this amazingly loud brainless sound which serves no purpose whatever except it jazzed the guys in the back room at AT&T perhaps.

Robert, your view is legitimate, but I don’t share it. After all this time, I still think that the Treo 700w’s keyboard is better. That said, we don’t have to agree.

WJ, usually connection issues depend on your location. The phone itself is good enough for voice calls, although I always found that smartphones were not as good for voice calls as the plain basic phones…

Found your review to be identical to my experience of 6 months with my blackjack. The only other factor that I experienced recently and it may be due to the Cingular - ATT change over and this is lack of signal strength in some areas. Recently, at an airport, others had connection and were talking and I had an unstable connection varying from one bar to four bars, which made it virtually impossible to make a phone call. Anyone else had this experience?

Your complaint of the Blackjack's secondary characters size may be shortsighted. Everyone knows where the standard QWERTY keys are located. I like the symbolic and numeric keys having a larger size. In today's emote driven messaging and the integration of the dialing keys on top of the QWERTY layout, this increased size is a benefit.
Take a look at the picture above and see how quickly you can locate the '@' key on each unit. Additionally, although the numeric keys seem strange on the BJ, these separated keys make it easier to avoid dialing mistakes.

Not to be a buzzkill or anything, but when I was buying the dataplan for my blackjack, I review the terms of service and found this:

"Furthermore, unlimited plans (except for dataconnect and blackberry® tethered) cannot be used for any applications that Tether the device (through use of, including without limitation, connection kits, other Phone/pda-to-computer accessories, bluetooth® or any other wireless technology) to laptops, Pcs, or other equipment for any purpose."

So, it would seem that, at this point, you can't use the BlackJack for a modem of any kind UNLESS you have Cingular's 79.99/mo data plan, which includes Tethering. :( Unless I'm wrong, then someone can correct me, gladly.

Bar non this smart phone tops them all. im typing this from my phone while wating for a download for gears of war on the 360. and resonding to all other functions. from graphics to watcing tv or simply using the speaker phone, all of the features were crefully considered tested and thought out. good job samsung! and thankyou for letting me live a little easier. well worth it guys. cingulars rebate program on the other hand blows the big one. enjoy.

When used as a 3G modem, is the download speed really slower than the upload speed or is that a typo (520kbps (upload) / 210kbps (download))? Usually it is the other way around.

Hi. I have the Treo 680, and I was thinking about trading for the Blackjack. What do you think?

I just bought a Blackjack and must agree that it is the best smartphone that I have ever owned. I did have a Cingular 8125 with the pullout keyboard and thought it was too bulky. This is only slightly larger than a non-flip phone and it does have really good speed on the internet.

Positives: Sling player works fantastic. syncs effortlessly to outlook and others

Negs: Doesn't work well with Java mini apps, i.e. google maps, opera - needs new firmware

You can drastically improve battery life with a few choice configuration options. The one change that has the most marked improvement is setting the key backlight to only come on during your night-time hours. Making this change gives my Blackjack almost 4 full days of standby time (vs. the original 48 hours).

Enjoy!

AT&T has decided to upgrade the Blackjack to WM6 mid-June, so look forward to having more features on your new favorite WM device!
